TERPSTRA WINS MICHIGAN SPORTS TALK AWARD
(March 19, 2009) In his first year as a radio show host, Sports Radio 1370 ESPN's Ryan Terpstra didn't have winning an award on his mind.

"I just wanted to be able to do a show that people would actually want to listen to," said Terpstra, who at age 25 is now in his second year as the host of "Sports Talk with Ryan Terpstra," which airs from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sports Radio 1370 ESPN, WGHN-AM.

"My goal initially was to work hard at doing my best, and hopefully the audience would respond."

That hard work paid off on March 11, as the Michigan Association of Broadcasters awarded Terpstra the first-place award in the "Afternoon Show Host" category at their annual Broadcast Excellence Awards.

The award can be won by any commercial radio talk show host who has an afternoon show in the state of Michigan, regardless of the genre of the show or whether it is on an AM or FM station. Terpstra was named the Division 4 winner, marking his first award.

"I'm really excited to receive this award, because I think it says something about what we've been able to do with the station," said Terpstra. "We had to basically start from scratch last year, and to be recognized for that hard work is really encouraging."

Aside from providing his daily opinions on the sports world, Terpstra also welcomes a number of state-wide sports personalities on-air, including a local sports angle with the Grand Haven Tribune's sports staff, Matt DeYoung and Nate Thompson.
