CANCELED MACON SPORTS SHOW FINDS NEW HOME
(March 17, 2009) Bill Shanks, whose Macon sports-talk radio show was pulled off the air in early February because of budget cuts, will soon have a new midstate radio home.

Beginning March 23, “The Bill Shanks Show” will air on WFSM-AM 1670, a Clear Channel, Fox Sports affiliate, weekdays from 3-6 p.m. Shanks previously had been on locally in a 4-6 p.m. time slot.

Before the show was canceled Feb. 9 by WIFN-FM 105.5, a Cumulus Media station, it had developed a strong following, averaging nearly 20 calls a day by the end of its 22-month run, Shanks said.

“That shows the participation and that shows you why sports-talk works in Macon,” he said Tuesday. “I knew we’d get back on the air.”

Shanks, 39, a Waycross native, will own the show and be responsible for selling advertising.

“It’s gonna be as close to the old show as possible – and be on an hour longer,” he said.

According to a news release announcing the program’s return, “WFSM is one of the strongest AM stations in the state.”

In the release, Bill Clark, market manager for Clear Channel Macon, said, “Bill will bring a great local flavor to the station and the show will offer area sports fans (the) opportunity to talk with an expert about their favorite teams.”

A news conference to promote the show’s return is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
