(March 17, 2009) Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame quarterback, Len Dawson, the most respected and beloved sports figure in Kansas City, will assume a new role on the KMBC 9 News team. After 43 years as KMBC 9 News sports anchor, Dawson will move to a new role as featured sports analyst. The new position allows Dawson to focus more time and attention on what he truly loves, covering Kansas City Chiefs football. It also gives him more freedom to enjoy family and other personal interests."My new role at KMBC lets me stay connected to the sport I love best, football… and the station that launched my television career," said Dawson. "I want to thank KMBC for giving me the opportunity to enjoy another fulfilling career after professional football. When I was approached 43 years ago regarding this job, I had absolutely no experience in broadcasting. KMBC extended their confidence and gave me a valuable opportunity to learn on the job. I consider myself fortunate to have met and learned from some great folks along the way. KMBC’s faith in my potential opened other doors. I expanded my career to include 24 years with HBO Sports and 25 years and counting with the Chief’s Radio Network." Dawson started his on-air career as a quarterback by day, sportscaster by night. He recalled having occasion to interview his own teammates -- although he was careful not to stir up too much controversy with his offensive line. His greatest memories at KMBC include being able to celebrate his 1987 election into the NFL Hall of Fame. Len Dawson will continue to provide insight and expertise on significant sports stories and sports specials on KMBC. This fall, Len’s unique perspective and experience will be showcased on KMBC’s coverage of Kansas City Chiefs football. He will back away from his long-time responsibility as primary sports anchor on KMBC 9 News at 6 and 10pm. “We are delighted that Len Dawson has agreed to continue with KMBC, with a specific focus on the Kansas City Chiefs,” said Wayne Godsey, President and General Manager of KMBC. “Len is the consummate professional. In the 10 years that I’ve worked with him, Len has consistently exhibited the qualities that made him a Hall of Famer with the Chiefs: meticulous preparation and a knack for being cool under pressure.” Len Dawson endeared himself to local sports fans as quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs from 1963 to 1975. Len led the Chiefs to Super Bowl IV and was named MVP in that game. He was named “NFL Man of the Year” in 1973 and was elected into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1987. His broadcasting career has been equally distinguished, having been honored as Best Kansas City Sportscaster. In addition to his responsibilities on KMBC 9 News, Len was a long time host of “Inside the NFL” on HBO. He continues to provide color commentary for the Chief’s Radio Network. Len is very active in the community, donating his time generously to help numerous charitable organizations, especially those serving the needs of children. KMBC’s sports anchor and reporting responsibilities will be handled by Nick Griffith and Karen Kornacki. |
