SAN DIEGO STATION SHOULD END AWFUL EXPERIMENT

(March 13, 2009) I know I promised I wouldn't listen to the circus act that is Jordan and Earl/Earl and Jordan on XX Sports 1090. But promises are made to be broken.
I was listening Wednesday afternoon, and it was without a doubt the worst radio anywhere, any time ---- AM or FM, a.m. or p.m. For four hours, these two ill-informed egomaniacs spewed their venom on the air. They ripped the Chargers for re-signing running back LaDainian Tomlinson. They ripped Tomlinson for taking the money. They ripped callers, they ripped e-mailers, they ripped each other. I've been around baseball dugouts my whole life and I've heard some pretty salty language. And it doesn't offend me. It's as much a part of the game as sunflower seeds. But I don't want to hear radio announcers refer to male genitalia on the air. I don't want to hear them talk about physical acts that are impossible. For their behavior Wednesday, the dynamic duo was given a two-day suspension. They didn't work Thursday. They won't work Friday. In an e-mail press release dated July 18, 2007 ---- that's not a typo ---- station vice president of programming Hal Brown said Jordan Smith had been suspended for "inappropriate comments made during the show Wednesday in reaction to the Chargers and Tomlinson." Brown found Jordan's "choice of words to be offensive and unacceptable." Brown went on to say, "We will evaluate the show and its hosts over the next few days to determine what further course of action, if any, is to be taken." I'll tell you what course of action should be taken. They should be fired. They should never be allowed on the air again. How can Lee Hamilton, Billy Werndl, Craig Elsten, Chris Ello and Joe Tutino not have full-time gigs and these two yahoos be on the air? Even Scott Kaplan and Billy Ray Smith ---- the morning-show hosts who recommended this disastrous duo for a show ---- couldn't defend them Thursday morning when callers dialed in to rant. It's OK to be opinionated. It's OK to have a dissenting opinion. That's what drives talk radio. But there has to be some validity to an argument. Arguments must be presented intelligently and professionally. Jordan and Earl/Earl and Jordan are circus clowns who should drive to their show in a Volkswagen bug and go on the air wearing grease paint and floppy shoes. They don't know sports; they don't check facts. Neither of 1090's top executives ---- John Lynch or Brown, the self-proclaimed "Hammer" ---- returned calls Thursday. Lynch and Brown gave these guys plenty of on-air rope. On Wednesday, they finally hung themselves. But why can't Lynch and Brown return a call? You made a mistake by hiring them; the experiment failed. Admit it. In the communications business, it doesn't take much to communicate. Yes, a press release was sent out, but it was dated nearly two years ago. Who checks facts at 1090? Jordan and Earl/Earl and Jordan? I'd like to communicate one final thought ---- the Jordan and Earl/Earl and Jordan experiment has run its course. Cut your losses and let them go. Dead air would be better. |
