SPORTS ANCHOR SALZBERG PULLING DOUBLE DUTY
(March 13, 2009) Since March 5, Russ Salzberg, Ch. 9 New York City's long-time sports anchor, also has worked for Ch. 5's 6 and 10 o'clock news.

Around 10:45, he does his Fox 5 report from the My9 newsroom in Secaucus, N.J., then walks into the studio to start over a few minutes later.

Why and how is this?

Duke Castiglione had been working a split shift for Ch. 5, on its morning show and late news.

To ease that burden, spokeswoman Audrey Pass said, Castiglione was moved exclusively to mornings and Salzberg was asked to do double duty. (Both channels are owned by News Corp.)

Isn't that a little, um, cheesy for a major market? Pass said it is "definitely unusual, definitely unique," but also efficient, perfect for these times.

"Rather than bring someone new on, we were able to utilize someone we already had," she said.

Salzberg said he does not make special efforts to differentiate the reports, preferring to let news dictate his approach.

"So far, it's been fun," he said. "Both studio crews have been great; communication has been great. If that wasn't the case, you'd have a problem."
