REDUCED ROLE FOR PHILLY SPORTSCASTER CAMPBELL

(March 11, 2009) Bill Campbell's 10-year run providing sports commentaries for KYW radio is over.
According to Campbell, the dean of Philadelphia sportscasters, the station said the decision is a cost-cutting measure. Campbell, 85, will still be on KYW (1060-AM) as part of the station's Friday noontime "Reporters Roundup" broadcast. "They're downsizing, like everybody else," Campbell said yesterday. "I've enjoyed doing the commentaries. It keeps me involved, makes me write and gets me to the games. As long as you feel well, you'd like to do it." Marc Rayfield, market manager for CBS in Philadelphia, which oversees KYW, said the station has not severed ties with Campbell. "Bill is welcome at KYW as long as he wants to be here," Rayfield said. "We have offered him a different role as we continue to evaluate our sports product." Campbell has had one of the most distinguished broadcasting careers in Philadelphia sports history. He has done play-by-play of Eagles, Phillies and Sixers games, plus Big 5 basketball. * |
