SPORTSCASTER'S SON MISSING AT SEA

(March 2, 2009) The Coast Guard is searching off Florida's Gulf Coast for a fishing boat carrying NFL players Corey Smith and Marquis Cooper and two other men missing more than a day in choppy seas.
Cooper grew up in Gilbert and is the son of Channel 12 sportscaster Bruce Cooper. Cooper and Smith had been teammates on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2004. Two others were also onboard the boat. Smith is a defensive end for the Detroit Lions, and Cooper is an Oakland Raiders linebacker. Smith's agent says Cooper owns the 21-foot boat. The vessel left Clearwater Pass for a fishing trip Saturday morning and did not return as expected. Coast Guard crews used a helicopter and an 87-foot ship to search a 750-square mile area west of Clearwater Pass, but poor weather is making the search difficult. Bruce Cooper issued a statement Sunday saying he's "praying and hoping for the best." |
