SPORTS RADIO KSLG DOWNPLAYS PROBLEMS
(February 13, 2009) Since WXOS joined the local all-sports battle on Jan. 1., the consensus is that three stations won't survive long-term. Recent rumblings are that KSLG is having problems, but its general manager, John Helmkamp, plays that down.

"Everybody's going through the economy downswing, and January for everybody was not good,'' he said. "But we have a lot of momentum, sales-wise, and things are improving drastically.

"If you had asked me in mid-January I would have been a little more pessimistic. But now I am extremely optimistic about the progress and momentum we have gathered from the sales side.''

Helmkamp also said that a deal with Brian McKenna is close, and if he signs he will become Miklasz's third co-host in about six months.

Randy Karraker was dumped in a cost-cutting move last summer and replaced by Jay Randolph Jr., who defected to KFNS after only a few months. Joe Zydlo has been filling in since then, but would move to other duties at the station.
