SILEO TAKING OVER SPORTS TALK IN FLORIDA
(January 21, 2009) What do the massive cuts Tuesday at national radio giant Clear Channel mean?

My radio sources tell me It means every major market in the state might soon be All-Sileo, all the time.

Local sports radio host Dan Sileo, who already simulcasts his morning drive-time radio show in Tampa and Orlando, is on in Jacksonville as of this morning and there's talk he may be on in Miami soon, too.

In Jacksonville, he replaced popular long-time host David Lamm and his co-host Joe Cowart on 930-AM, the city's most established sports station 930-AM.

Full disclosure: I do a morning radio show (9 to 11 a.m.) with co-host Marc Daniels on 1080-AM (not a Clear Channel station) so I guess you could call me a competitor of Sileo's although his show is on in a different time slot (6 to 9 a.m.). Honestly, though, I don't consider us to be competitors. I'm a sports-talk junkie. I listen to sports talk no matter what station it's on and I've listened to Sileo since he arrived in Orlando five or six years ago.

Frankly, I don't like where local sports talk is headed with Clear Channel essentially cutting costs to simulcast syndicated shows into all their major markets. For instance, I like Sileo when he talks about sports Orlando is interested in (Magic, Gators, Seminoles, Knights, NFL), but we don't get nearly enough of those topics in Orlando because he's often talking about the Bucs,Rays and Lightning (snooze) because he has to please his larger Tampa market. What's it going to be like now that he's in Jacksonville and Miami? Do we really want an influx of Jaguars, Heat and Marlins talk on our local airwaves?

The other news coming out of Clear Channel's cuts is that it looks like 740-AM may soon be dropping its Latin format and going back to an all-sports format with a lineup that could include: Sileo in the morning, followed by syndicated programming (Dan Patrick and Jim Rome) with a chance that the legendary Shot Doctor and partner Mike Tuck will provide more local programming during afternoon drive.

Stay tuned.
