NEW DEAL FOR ESPN'S BERMAN?

(January 19, 2009) Anchor Chris Berman has been the face and voice of ESPN for 30 years.

In a recent profile, the Associated Press reported the 53-year-old's contract expires on his 55th birthday May, 10, 2010.

Is ESPN talking to Berman about a contract extension? Norby Williamson, ESPN's executive vice president of production, would not comment specifically on Berman's deal. But he did say he could not imagine ESPN without him. "I am confident he'll be part of this place for a long time to come. And we need him to be part of this place for a long time to come."

Berman said in a statement Sunday: "It's a complete non-issue. … It's way in the future. ESPN is my family. What excites me is being able to share our 30th year together all year long."

The host of Sunday NFL Countdown is one of the few ESPN personalities who can single-handedly "move the needle" with viewers and TV ratings, Williamson said.
