CBC WON'T BROADCAST JAYS BASEBALL
(January 15, 2009) The CBC has pulled itself out as a carrier for Blue Jays telecasts, according to a report in The Globe and Mail.

Scott Moore, head of CBC Sports, told the publication on Tuesday that a drop in revenue and the cost of television rights forced the CBC to pull out of its agreement with the Blue Jays.

The CBC's two-year contract with the Jays expired after the 2008 season.

"We weren't able to make a deal that made financial sense in these economic times," Moore told The Globe and Mail. "We have no games, nor do we have plans to do any games this year."

Because cable channels are paid by cable distributors and broadcasters are not, Moore said the CBC, a broadcaster, was not able to supplement ad revenue with the revenue from cable companies.

Jays interim chief executive officer Paul Beeston told the paper that 145 of his club's 162 games will still be televised, however, with 125 being transmitted on Sportsnet and 20 on TSN.
