A'S BASEBALL SIGNS SPANISH RADIO DEAL

(January 15, 2009) The A's made a little franchise history on Wednesday when they announced that they've agreed to terms with Spanish Beisbol Network (SBN) on a five-year radio contract.

Beginning with the 2009 season, every regular-season game Oakland plays -- home and away -- will be broadcast in Spanish on KDIA (1640 AM) and KDYA (1190 AM). Never before have all 162 A's games been available over the air in a language other than English.

"This announcement represents a milestone for the Oakland Athletics," said Ken Pries, the A's vice president of broadcasting and communications. "Our Spanish-speaking fans have provided tremendous support and loyalty over the years, and it gives us great pleasure to reach this agreement to offer non-stop, start-to-finish coverage of our games to this valued audience.

"We thank KDIA/KDYA and the Spanish Beisbol Network for their tremendous cooperation in making this deal a reality."

In a shared effort, KDIA Radio will air all A's night games this season, while KDYA will carry every day game on the schedule. It was also announced that veteran announcer Amaury Pi-Gonzalez, a pioneer in establishing Spanish baseball radio play-by-play in the Bay Area, will serve as the "Voice of the A's" for all Spanish broadcasts.

"We are very glad to associate KDIA and KDYA with the Oakland Athletics' long legacy of excellence, and to use our broad signal coverage to connect the Oakland Athletics to Spanish speaking fans throughout the Bay Area," said Andy Santamaria, managing director of Baybridge Communications and KDIA/KDYA.

The Spanish Beisbol Network, a sports media broadcasting and content company founded in Boston in 2001, currently has contracts with the A's, Red Sox, Phillies, Nationals and the Caribbean World Series.

Well known in both English and Spanish media circles, Pi-Gonzalez will be calling his 31st season of big league ball in 2009. He began his career in 1977 with the A's, and he's also broadcast for the Giants, Mariners and Angels.

Pi-Gonzalez called the 1988, 1989 and 1990 World Series for the A's, and the 2002 Series for the Giants. A resident of Fremont, Calif., he is an elected member of both the Cuban Sports Hall of Fame and the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Hall of Fame, and he was the English voice for the Caribbean World Series for Fox Sports International in 2001 and 2002.

Pries said a game analyst is expected to be announced shortly and will join Pi-Gonzalez in the broadcast booth.
