SPORTSCASTER EAGLE PASSED ON FRANCESA GIG
(January 12, 2009) The closest Mike Francesa has come to settling on a sidekick for his WFAN show came in September, when he reached out to Ian Eagle.

Eagle explained to the On the DL blog why he turned down the opportunity:

"I do believe that it could have worked. I'm certainly not going to go in there and be Chris 'Mad Dog' Russo. But there was no way for me to keep doing the things that I've been doing in my career and building toward and do that show and do it well on a daily basis.

"I see myself as a play-by-play guy. I see myself as someone who can be at the network level for 30 years. I think looking back on it, I'll be more satisfied than if I went back to the sport radio route, which was my roots."

That's his prerogative, obviously, but it's a shame for WFAN listeners, because he would have been excellent with the big guy.
