(January 9, 2009) The Cambridge man charged with making obscene calls and threats to WEEI sports duo John Dennis and Gerry Callahan and their bosses is a “regular guy” who is embarrassed by the “whole situation,” his lawyer said yesterday.
“He has absolutely no intention of ever calling the station again,” said Adam Narris, the attorney for David S. Banner. Banner, 57, made four calls late last year to Dennis, WEEI program director Jason Wolfe and Julie Kahn, vice president of Entercom New England, owner of WEEI-AM (850), according to court records. In the disturbing messages, records say, Banner said he wanted Kahn, Wolfe and Dennis to “die.” Narris said Banner is a “really good person” who has no criminal record and has stopped listening to sports radio. Banner’s first voice mail was left for Kahn on Oct. 29. “ . . . the next time Gerry Callahan laughs in somebody’s face with his snide, snickering laugh, I’m gonna come in there and kick his (expletive) teeth in. And then I’m gonna look for you and kick your (expletive) teeth in, you (expletive),” he said. In an Oct. 30 message for Kahn, Banner allegedly said, “Shut Callahan up. Talk sports in the morning. You sleazy, dirty (expletive, expletive expletive).” In a Nov. 4 message left for Dennis, Banner said: “You and your Ku Klux Klan partner should talk sports you (expletive, expletive). And the next thing, too, Dennis, when you talk about somebody’s look, look in the (expletive) mirror you doughnut-eating (expletive, expletive). . . . die you son of a (expletive).” The final message was left for Kahn on Nov. 4. “ . . . And every morning when I listen to the show, I just say, jeez, maybe tomorrow I wake up and hear that Jason (expletive) Wolfe and Julie (expletive) Kahn died. That would be my wish, for you to (expletive) die.” Banner was arraigned Tuesday on two counts of criminal harassment, two counts of threats to commit a crime and a single count of making annoying phone calls. He was released on $1,000 personal recognizance. |
