POWELL MIGHT BE CHOICE FOR BRAVES BASEBALL
(January 6, 2009) Milwaukee Brewers radio announcer Jim Powell might be hired by the Atlanta Braves to call games on radio.

According to an industry source, if Powell is hired by the Braves, he would replace Pete Van Wieren, who in October announced he was retiring from broadcasting after 33 years with Atlanta.

Powell, who has worked 13 seasons on Brewers radio broadcasts with partner BobUecker, attended the University of Georgia.

Brewers spokesman Tyler Barnes confirmed Monday that the Braves were considering Powell.

"Speaking from our perspective, we love Jim," Barnes said. "We certainly support his effort to take his career to the next level, but he would be a tough one for us to replace."

Powell could not be reached for comment.

WTMJ Radio hired Powell in 1996 and he has worked for 13 seasons on Brewers broadcasts, the longest stint of any of Uecker's partners in Milwaukee.

Uecker, who turns 74 on Jan. 26, is poised to return for his 39th season as a radio voice of the Brewers. Uecker is employed by the Brewers, unlike Powell, who is employed by WTMJ Radio, which owns the rights to Brewers broadcasts.

In the 2008 season, Van Wieren worked exclusively on Braves radio games, which are carried on both FM and AM radio stations in Atlanta, WUBL and WGST.

On Aug. 3 of last year, Braves broadcaster Skip Caray died. Caray had been part of Braves radio and television broadcasts since 1976.
