(January 16, 2009) Cory Giger of the Mirror sports staff will begin hosting a weekday radio show for Forever Broadcasting today.
The show, formerly "Front & Center," will now be called ''Sports Central with Cory Giger,'' and will focus on teams of particular interest to fans in central Pennsylvania. The program will air from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday on two Forever stations - ESPN Radio 1430 AM in Altoona and ESPN Radio 1450 AM in State College. The show began as the brainchild of Rob Egan, who hosted it for three years before being named general manager of the Altoona Curve in November. "Rob did a fantastic job bringing a quality show to the airwaves every day, and I hope to continue what he started," Giger said. "My show will have a similar format to Rob's, featuring athletes, coaches and reporters talking about the region's favorite teams, as well as listeners calling in with their opinions." Giger was a frequent guest host on "Front & Center," and co-hosted, with Egan, the three-hour Monday Football Final show, which began this year. "When Cory came along to host the Monday Football Final, I really thought he had some great insights on sports - in the Mirror and his relateability on radio topics came across really well," Forever general manager Dave Davies said. "Obviously, with Rob leaving, Cory had the same belief as I did on what the show can be - interviews and insight as opposed to caller-generated. I'm thrilled Cory wants to take the show to a new level. He brings a wealth of experience covering Penn State and the Altoona Curve. We're thrilled to have him here." Giger, a 35-year-old Arkansas native, came to the Mirror in 1999. He has covered the Curve since their inception and took on the Penn State football beat in 2006. He's won numerous sportswriting awards at the Mirror. ''I'm really pleased a regional sports show will continue on ESPN Radio in Altoona and State College," Egan said. "Cory brings a new energy and style as well as a drive to build on what's been started to make it better. I know he'll do well.'' |
