(January 2, 2009) Scott McKinney, who built a listening audience throughout the Southeast with his syndicated, sports talk radio show, will soon be heading to prison.
McKinney, 42, host of the popular "Southern Sports Tonight'' pleaded guilty Friday in a Fort Walton Beach courthouse to nine counts of theft and single counts of organized fraud, money laundering and racketeering. State attorney Russ Edgar told the Northwest Florida Daily News that McKinney could serve up to five years in state prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 24. McKinney was charged with bilking more than $100,000 from investors for his radio show. In addition, Edgar told the newspaper that McKinney is also charged with stealing $10,000 from his ex-fiance using her credit card. The plea agreement reached with McKinney also prohibits him from being on the air in any form until his sentence is completed. McKinney is well-known throughout the Southeast among college football fans. His three-hour program, which airs on 98.1-FM and focuses on the SEC, had 110 stations from Texas to South Carolina at its peak syndication. |
