ELGIN STATION ADDS SPORTS SHOW
(July 23, 2008) Sports talk is making a comeback on Elgin's radio airwaves.

That's because Michael Greene, the news director at WRMN AM-1410, is incorporating his love of sports into an aggressive move to make the station's programing more local.

The centerpiece of the changes so far is a new sports talk show. Sports Wrap airs on WRMN every Saturday from 4-5 p.m. and aims to keep Elgin-area sports fans current on the local scene.

Greene co-hosts the show with Dave Krayz, and this Saturday will be the second hour-long version of the program.

"Sports is my passion," Greene said. "As news director I want to bring a sports flavor to what we do."

To that end, Greene has also folded more sports banter into The Morning Wakeup Call -- the station's morning news program that Greene co-hosts with Mike Hunziker.

With the philosophy that local is better, the show will likely lead off with Chicago Bandits talk before branching out to what's going on with the Cubs, White Sox, Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks from the Fox Valley's perspective. Once the fall high school sports season kicks off, Greene hopes to talk more about that.

"We're still taking suggestions from listeners about the format, but right now we're taking a look back at the week to talk about what's relevant to the listeners in this area," Greene said. "We want our listeners to get involved because when people want to know what's going on in the Fox Valley, we think WRMN is where they should turn."

This isn't the first time WRMN has ventured into local sports talk. Most recently Kyle Bault hosted Gametime, which aired Saturday mornings at 7 a.m. before Greene came aboard. WRMN play-by-play man Jeff Myers has also hosted a similarly titled program called Sportswrap.

WRMN currently airs Bandits and Schaumburg Flyers games, but Greene isn't sure if the station will be out to cover live high school events.

But Greene says he's open to suggestions from that station's audience.

"We have a loyal listenership," he said. "We get some constructive criticism and we want to get more loyal listeners. We're trying to bring Elgin back to Elgin a little bit.

"I would love to know there are places here in town that have WRMN on in the background because people there want to know what's going on in Elgin."
