TRIAL DELAYED FOR SPORTS HOST

(July 18, 2008) A trial for sports talk radio host Scott McKinney on Florida charges of investment fraud, theft and racketeering has been delayed until Sept. 2.
McKinney was scheduled to go to trial on July 7, but that date was continued, according to court records. He faces 16 charges surrounding allegations that he swindled investors to fund “Southern Sports Tonight” in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., starting in 2005. The Clarion-Ledger reported last month that two Mississippi men and a Nashville man allege McKinney bilked them out of some $140,000 in a similar scam from 2001-2004. The men said an investigator from attorney general Jim Hood’s office had contacted them, but a spokeswoman for Hood couldn’t confirm an ongoing investigation. That spokeswoman wasn’t available today. McKinney, a Mississippi native, also has a new attorney, according to court records. West Ritchie, his previous attorney, withdrew as counsel of record and McKinney has been assigned a public defender after being found indigent. A person answering the phone at the Okaloosa County public defender’s office confirmed that Bruce Miller is McKinney’s attorney. Miller’s assistant said that office’s policy is to not comment to the media. |
