(July 15, 2008) The University of South Dakota has announced a new partnership with BEE 102.7 in Sioux Falls to serve as the flagship radio station for the 2008-09 season. The 50,000 watt FM signal will carry all 11 USD football games, the entire men’s basketball schedule and doubleheaders involving the men’s and women’s basketball team.

The BEE 102.7 signal will allow USD to continue to provide quality coverage in Vermillion and the surrounding area as well as coverage in the Sioux Falls market. Total coverage for Coyote events will span a radius of over 60 miles from Sioux Falls. The signal will reach South Dakota cities such as North Sioux City, Freeman, Madison, Brookings and Dell Rapids, Minnesota towns such as Worthington, Slayton and Pipestone and Iowa communities in Le Mars, Sibley and Sheldon.

“This is exciting news for USD fans and radio listeners in the Sioux Falls market,” said South Dakota Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen. “We are delighted to begin a new relationship with Results Radio and BEE 102.7 FM.”

BEE 102.7 is a part of the seven station Results Radio/Cumulus Media Group. “We are thrilled about adding USD football and basketball to our already strong sports lineup,” Don Jacob, general manager of Bee 102.7, said. “USD fans and alumni are very loyal and this new partnership will give them the football and basketball coverage they desire.”

USD’s switch to BEE 102.7 will also bring a new Voice of the Coyotes. Warren Swain, a veteran of Division I collegiate athletics broadcasting, will handle the play-by-play duties for the Coyotes. During his distinguished career, Swain worked 27 seasons at Bowl Championship Series (BCS) institutions. He was recently the voice of Ohio University athletics where, in addition to game coverage, he also hosted the “Frank Solich Call-In Show”, “Tim O’Shea Call-In Show” and the daily “Bobcat Minute.”

Prior to calling Bobcat athletics, Swain was the voice of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He called Husker football games from 1996-02, and during that time called some historic games in Nebraska history. He announced the 1997 Orange Bowl in which the Huskers won the national championship. At Nebraska, he broadcast seven bowl games including two Orange Bowls, one Rose Bowl and one Fiesta Bowl.

“First of all, I’m very impressed with Results Radio and I want to thank Don Jacobs for the opportunity to be the voice of the Coyotes,” said Swain. “I have watched The University of South Dakota grow over the years and I’m thrilled to be coming aboard at such an exciting time. Coming back to Sioux Falls gives me a chance to be closer to my family and be a part of USD’s move to Division I.

Before his seven-year run with the Huskers, Swain spent 11 seasons with the Virginia Cavaliers in the ACC. He was the sports director at WINA and play-by-play voice of the Cavaliers in Charlottesville. Swain got his start in collegiate athletics broadcasting in 1972 calling Iowa State football and Creighton men’s basketball for KMA Radio in Shenandoah, Iowa. In that position, he stayed with ISU football through the 1979 season and called Creighton hoops for two years before the station switched to ISU men’s basketball, which he called through the 1979-80 campaign. From Iowa State, Swain then became the voice of the Oregon Ducks. Following three years in Eugene, he was the sports director at KRNT in Des Moines, Iowa and voice of the Drake Bulldogs from 1983-85.

A graduate of the Drake University School of Journalism, Swain has been named the Iowa, Oregon, Virginia and Nebraska “Sportscaster of the Year” during his career, including the Virginia award six times.

Negotiations are currently taking place regarding full schedule coverage for USD women’s basketball.
