News director Michele Gors says it was easy to pick Jenn Bates out of stack of resume tapes because she "just sort of jumps off the screen at you."

Bates' first day is June 9.

Gors isn't concerned viewers won't accept a woman in that job.

"It's not the 1960s anymore," she says.

Still, Bates says the issue comes up on a fairly regular basis in Washington state, where she currently works.

"It's really interesting because I have women that come up to me that are so excited about it," Bates says.

Guys are sometimes intimidated, though, she says.

"They automatically ask me the hardest trivia question I know," Bates says. "I have a few in my back pocket that I'll throw out to them."

It looks like the last female sportscaster in Wichita was Kristy Deer, who left KAKE, Channel 10, in 1990.

Before her, Cynthia Tepp was at KSN, Channel 3, in the late '80s.

Bates and Gors say it's clear women can be sportscasters just as easily as men.

The argument that they can't report on sports like college or pro football because they haven't played them just doesn't fly.

"Guess what?" Gors says. "Neither have most of the men who report sports."
